Operation Codename “Chow Chow”

Chow Chow

There are plenty of dog breeders in HCMC but most of them are unethical to say the least, all they care about is making money and couldn’t care less about the health of their pups. Majority of the pups receive no vaccination at the point of sale and most are likely to be carrying dangerous disease/virus such as distemper and kennel cough.

You can easily purchase breeds such as Shih Tzu and Pekingese (toy dogs) for as low as $60-100, without papers, along the road side in Saigon. However if you’re looking for breeds such as Golden Retriever, Labrador, Rottweiler, and Doberman then best of luck.

I’ve been itching to get a dog in Vietnam for the last 3 years. I love dogs as I believe they provide the best medicine to release stress. My dream dog is a Siberian Husky which I plan on getting once I settle down back home in Sarawak, Malaysia, in a few years time. I even made an inquiry with the local Vet on whether if it’s possible to import a Husky to Sarawak, to my delight they said it’s possible!

Chow Chow

After much consideration and discussion with my girlfriend we’ve decided to hunt for a Chow Chow. I tried for several days searching for a Chow Chow breeder in Thailand as it’s much closer to Vietnam thus less time spent on travel and less stress on the pup. Unfortunately the effort came to naught, however I did managed to find several respectable breeders in Philippines and have made contacts with them. As I’ll be traveling down to Manila soon for a few weeks, I’m planning to take the opportunity to visit some of the kennels and if schedule permits maybe attend a dog show or two. It won’t be an easy task bringing the pup back to Vietnam, certainly it may take 2-3 months to go through the whole process. Stay tuned!

    2. Martin Jr. Says:

A chow pup can be as affordable as US$200 to as ridiculously high as US$3,000. A pup with a good pedigree coming from champ line can easily command US$1,500.

You can try searching for Chows dedicated websites, one of them being http://www.netchows.com/ which have a list of well known breeders all over the world. But I do recommend researching further on any kennel, making sure they are not puppy mill!
